Safflower - Carthamus tinctorius

Symbolism: Endurance, vitality, cheerfulness, and good fortune. In some traditions, safflower represents healing, protection, and even marital happiness due to its vibrant, long-lasting blooms.

Description: A thistle-like annual with spiky green foliage and bright, globe-shaped flower heads in shades of yellow, orange, and red. Known for its long vase life and striking, textural appearance.

Named after: Derived from the Old French safleur, linked to “saffron,” as the plant was historically used as a dye and spice substitute.

Latin/Scientific name: Carthamus tinctorius

Native to: The Middle East and parts of Asia, cultivated for centuries for its oil and dyes.

Flowering period: Summer (typically June–September).

Vase life: Excellent vase life of 7–14 days, making it a favorite for long-lasting arrangements.

Popular use in floral arrangements or bouquets: Adds a bold pop of warm color and unique texture. Often used in rustic, summer, or autumn-themed bouquets. Its durability makes it popular for event arrangements.

Pet Toxicity: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, but ingestion of large quantities of the plant material may cause mild stomach upset.
