Amaranthus - Love-Lies-Bleeding, Tassel Flower, Foxtail Amaranth
Symbolism: Immortality, unfading love, strength, and resilience. The name itself reflects endurance, as the blooms often dry beautifully while holding their form and color.
Description: Amaranthus is a striking ornamental known for its cascading tassels or upright plumes of tiny, velvety florets. Available in deep burgundy, crimson, lime green, and bronze tones, it adds movement, depth, and texture to both fresh and dried arrangements.
Named after: From the Greek word amarantos meaning “unfading” or “immortal,” in reference to its lasting beauty.
Latin/Scientific name: Amaranthus caudatus (commonly used in floristry), with related species including Amaranthus cruentus and Amaranthus hypochondriacus.
Native to: Tropical regions of South America, though cultivated widely around the world as an ornamental and for its edible leaves and grains.
Flowering period: Summer (typically June–September).
Vase life: Excellent vase life of 7–14 days, making it a favorite for long-lasting arrangements.
Popular use in floral arrangements or bouquets: Loved in cascading bridal bouquets, dramatic centerpieces, and modern garden-style designs. Its draping tassels pair beautifully with roses, dahlias, and hydrangeas, while upright forms add structure to bold arrangements.
Pet Toxicity: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though ingestion of large amounts of plant material may cause mild stomach upset.
When in stock in our shops: Late summer through fall, with availability peaking from August to October.
Care tips:
- Trim stems at an angle and place immediately in clean, deep water.
- Remove any foliage below the waterline to prevent bacterial growth.
- Handle gently to protect the delicate tassels.
- To preserve, hang stems upside down in a dry, airy place; the blooms retain both form and color beautifully.
