Protea (Protea cynaroides)
Symbolism:
The protea flower has been a symbol of strength and courage for centuries. Its unique shape, hardy nature and vibrant colours have made it an icon in many cultures. Ancient Greeks associated the protea with immortality and Zeus, god of thunder. It is also the national flower of South Africa.
Description: The protea flower is a large, bowl-shaped flower head made up of many small florets. The florets are often reddish, pinkish or yellow in colour, and the flower heads are surrounded by stiff, colourful bracts.
Named after: The protea flower is named after Proteus, a Greek god who could change his shape which is similar to the flower's many shapes, sizes, and colours.
Latin/Scientific name: Protea cynaroides (Protea repens (L.) L.)
Native to: Native to South Africa, it is one of the oldest family of flowers dating back to 300 million years.
Flowering period: Late winter to early spring
Vase life: 14 to 21 days
Pet toxicity: Not well documented for toxicity in household pets but may cause gastrointestinal upset.
