Delphinium – Delphinium elatum

Symbolism: Delphinium flowers symbolize cheerfulness, goodwill, and protection.

Birth Month: July

Description: Delphinium flowers are expressive, tall, triumphant, showy, and noble. Their colours range from white to pink, purple, and blue. They feature spikes 8 to 20 inches long, consisting of individual florets that are 1 to 2 inches in diameter. These spikes are born on stems with medium green leafy foliage, and multiple flowers occur in a spike.

Named after: Delphinium gets its name from the Greek word delphis, meaning “dolphin”. The name is derived from the resemblance of the flower's petals to the fins and nose of the graceful marine mammal.

Latin/Scientific name: Delphinium elatum

Native to: Throughout the Northern Hemisphere and also the high mountains of tropical Africa

Flowering period: Early summer and often again in late summer or early fall

Vase life: 7 to 10 days

Popular use in floral arrangements or bouquets: Delphiniums are often used in floral arrangements to add height and create a showy, eye-catching look. They are especially used for events and airy, casual garden arrangements. Their delicate spikes make them excellent line flowers, giving bouquets and arrangements a Victorian appearance. Also popular in custom designs for standing orders.
