Scabiosa –  Pincushion flower

Symbolism: Scabiosa represents love, purity, and peace. It also signifies 'unfortunate love' and was frequently used to express sorrow or longing.

Description: Round and fluffy petals open into delicate 3-inch button-like blooms. Its stamens resemble pins inserted into the center, giving it a unique pincushion-like appearance. Scabiosa is available in red, purple, burgundy, lavender, pink, blue, and white.

Named after: The name "Scabiosa" is derived from the Latin word "scabies," which means "itch." Historically, Scabiosa was used in traditional medicine to treat skin conditions like scabies and other itches and irritations. This medicinal use is reflected in its common name.

Latin/Scientific name:  Scabiosus

Native to:  Europe, Asia, and Africa. They are particularly abundant in the Mediterranean region, which is home to many wild species of Scabiosa.

Flowering period: Late spring - early autumn

Vase life: 3 to 7 days

Popular use in floral arrangements or bouquets:  Used as a focal point or a filler in a larger arrangement or bouquet.
