Symbolism: Devotion, friendship, wealth, fortune, and prosperity

Description: Alstroemeria, commonly called the Peruvian lily or lily of the Incas, is a genus of flowering plants in the family Alstroemeriaceae. This modest yet long-lasting garden flower boasts loose clusters of trumpet-shaped blooms that come in a wide variety of colours, including white, yellow, red, orange, pink, and purple.

Named after: Baron Claus von Alstromer, a Swedish botanist who collected the seeds from Spain in 1753.

Latin/Scientific name: Liliaceae

Native to: South America, although some varieties have become naturalized in the U.S., Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Madeira, and the Canary Islands.

Flowering period: In the spring in more northern climates

Vase life: 7 to 14 days

Popular uses in floral arrangements or bouquets: The tall, long-lasting blooms and vivid colours make the Alstroemeria a perfect colour highlight in seasonal vase arrangements, a lovely line flower in more contemporary arrangements, or a focal point in short-stemmed clusters.
